13th Internationales Kammermusikfestival Nuremberg 2014

Nachrichten en Stiftungsaktivitäten en
The 13th Festival in Nuremberg focussed on the great composer Hans Werner Henze. His music has been contrasted with that of Beethoven, Britten and Mahler, thus presenting also his idols, aesthetic standards and expressive skills.

Henze um 1952

Highly artificial songs for tenor (Three Auden Songs, Six Songs from the Arabian, Kammermusik 1958) alternated with instrumental music, whose motives derived from folk music (Neue Volkslieder und Hirtengesänge), and a top event was Henze's collection of political songs, Voices, paired with Mahler's Lied von der Erde. (Henze himself once called his “Voices” like this). The Festival's most prominent participant was Mark Padmore, now world wide in great demand, who interpreted the songs for tenor with an elegant, yet highly expressive voice.

Another climax was the world premiere of Riccardo Panfili's 1st String Quartet, Januskopf. stimulated by the last self portrait of Ernst Ludwig Kirchner.

The audience as well as the critics were ravished by the rediscoveries (for Nuremberg), and the musicians were happy about the exciting pieces they could perform. So it was no surprise that the Festival of 2014 had a terrific success.

The Hans Werner Henze-Foundation was happy to help with

  • artistic consulting- support of Panfili's world premiere
  • support and moderating a panel discussion with Detlev Glanert (Henze's student), Ks. Frances Pappas (mezzosoprano), Peter Selwyn (conductor) and Andrew West (pianist)
  • finding musicians
  • moderation of the lunchtime concerts in the communal library
