Dance Theatre: Sinfonia N. 8 at Montepulciano
by Michael Kerstan
At the 44th Cantiere Internazionale d'Arte in Montepulciano, a choreography of Henze's Sinfonia N. 8 will be shown, a danced Midsummer Night's Dream.
On 24 July 2019, the Executive Director of the Hans Werner Henze Foundation gives an introduction to Henze's Sinfonia N. 8 at Villa Trecci, an ecologically restored estate with a huge park, to which the owner couple Sorlini has invited the audience. He emphasises the references to Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream, especially the composed content of the three movements (Puck's journey, Titania's love for Bottom, transformed into a donkey, Puck's final monologue) which then become relevant in the choreographed performance.
The event will takes place at night in the Piazza Grande in Montepulciano: Mendelssohn's Midsummer Night's Dream music is given in the form of a concert, Henze's Sinfonia N. 8 as a ballet (choreography: Maria Stella Poggioni) and Shakespeare's comedy in a greatly abridged version, staged by Carlo Pasquini. The artistic director of the festival, Roland Böer, conducts the RNCM Symphony Orchestra. The place is packed with audience members until the end at 1:00 a.m., and the music was enthusiastically received.
