Comment
This is an orchestration and a free adaption of three movements from a Hartmann piano sonata, entitled “27. April 1945” which the composer wrote after having been the terrified eye-witness to an endless, miserable stream of prisoners from the Dachau concentration camp. The music contains a number of quotations from Jewish folk music as well as from campaign songs of the international worker’s movement. It is an expression of sympathy, indignation and solidarity with the victims of nazifascism.
