In the music season 2014/15 the Vogler Quartet celebrated its 30th anniversary. On this occasion four concerts in the Konzerthaus Berlin were recorded live and a selcetion of these was compiled for a 3 CD box. All those compositions have in common that they seek for beauty and also achieve it.
Henze's 3rd string quartet, written only 25 years after the 2nd, is dedicated to the memory of his mother, who died on New Year's Eve 1975/76. "It is intended to be October music, and the feelings of ageing, of suffering, of the self-inflicted, should
all be expressed in it, but quietly and patiently, resignedly," he wrote in his autobiography "Bohemian Fifths". At the end of the piece there is a light, sad reminiscence of Beethoven's "Must it be?" from Beethoven's last quartet op. 135.
Henze also quotes Berg's "Lyric Suite" which is based on Wagner's opera "Tristan und Isolde" and the "Liebestod".
