«[...] When I was seventeen years old, they put a uniform on me and gave me the "honor" of participating in the end of World War II, in which my father had died and which had thrown my family into terrible difficulties. Even earlier, as a boy, however, I had been able to observe with fairly open eyes the reality of Nazi-fascism and the effects it had on the lives of families, on small social groups. The trace left by those traumas was a repulsion for everything to do with violence, with pain, with betrayal, with lies and dishonesty. After the war, with difficulty, I was finally able to find my own style and way of life, but in a country that was not my own. Things turned out that after the three years I planned to spend in Italy to write a three-act opera, "König Hirsch," I was unable to return to the North».
