Nachtstücke und Arien (Nocturnes and Arias)
Composer: Hans Werner Henze
Lyrics: Ingeborg Bachmann
Soprano: Juliane Banse
Cellist: Narek Hakhnazaryan
Orchestra: ORF Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra
Conductor: Marin Alsop
The premiere of the Night Pieces and Arias caused a minor scandal at the Donaueschingen Music Festival in 1957 when Hans Werner Henze's colleagues Karlheinz Stockhausen, Pierre Boulez and Luigi Nono indignantly left the concert hall after a few bars. Henze had allowed himself to compose BEAUTIFUL music and turned his back on the dogmatic use of dodecaphony.
The nine movements of the orchestral fantasy Los Caprichos characterise a series of Francisco Goya's socially critical satirical etchings, including The sleep of reason gives birth to monsters.
In his cello concerto Liebeslieder, Hans Werner Henze interprets English love poems from five centuries.
