This CD offers an enormous programme of contrasts with the 1st Symphony and Sinfonia N. 6 by Hans Werner Henze.
He wrote his First at the age of 21, following in the footsteps of classical music and Stravinsky, while the world of New Music was eagerly and apodictically following Arnold Schoenberg and Anton Webern. The composer revised the piece twice in collaboration with the Berlin Philharmonic - in 1963 and 1991.
The Sixth, his "Cuban Symphony", is a commitment to revolution and solidarity with the Third World. It incorporates Afro-Cuban mythology, Vietnamese music and music by Mikis Theodorakis as well as a poem by Miguel Barnet, "Fe de erratas". In the revision of the work, Henze has, among other things, recomposed the originally aleatoric passages.
