Both Yukio Mishima's novel "Gogo no Eiko" and Hans Werner Henze's opera "Das verratene Meer", which is based on it, create a claustrophobic scenario of hopelessness in which the struggle for normality is damned to failure. The live recording from December 2020 (without a significant audience) at the Vienna State Opera was enthusiastically received by critics after radio concerts: "Simone Young controlled the huge orchestral apparatus in the Viennese performance and, together with an excellent ensemble of singers, ensured an evening of opera that will be remembered" (hr2 Kultur).
