Shortly before Hans Werner Henze's death, bassist Daniele Roccato organised a private performance of his own arrangement of Henze's "Trauer-Ode", originally composed for six violoncellos. Henze was so taken with the new version of the piece that he included it in his list of published works. The present recording includes the "Trauer-Ode" for six double basses as well as two solo works for bass, "Serenade" and "San Biagio 9 Agosto ore 12.07". The highlight of the album, however, is Daniele Roccato's interpretation of Hans Werner Henze's " Concerto for Double Bass and Orchestra": the piece was a milestone in the history of the double bass, expanding the technical and expressive possibilities of the instrument - and has become an essential part of the standard repertoire for young soloists.
The Funeral Ode for Margaret Geddes appears for the first time on CD.
