hese nine instrumental pieces are concerned with the human fears and needs of our time, with illness and death, love and loneliness, and in particular with the character of Michael Vyner, an extremely lively and passionate man, his life and his death, and my grief at his loss which stands for the loss of so many others who have also tragically departed from our world.

The spirit of this music can be explained by such facts, and by our time by which it seems to me to be strongly influenced, by its horrors and passions, its beauty and dynamics.
Forty years ago, I wrote a short “Concerto” for piano and a group of instruments for the concerts at the Paris Théâtre Marigny organized by Boulez. It was only a fragment. Later, I time and again wanted to get down to picking up the piece and finishing it.
In the “Introitus” of the present “Requiem”, the Marigny music finally reappears, in a different form, to be unfolded, worked out and developed in the following “Spiritual Concertos” in ever new contexts.
The movements of the “Requiem” can be played separately or in any desired combination.

Henzes Requiem in der Tonhalle Düsseldorf, 30.09.2016

On 30 September, the DoelenEnsemble performs Henze's Requiem together with the notabu.ensemble neue musik at the Tonhalle in Düsseldorf. The soloists are Bassam Mussad (trumpet) and Maaren van Veen (piano), with Mark-Andreas Schlingensiepen conducting. As an introduction, there will be a conversation between the dramaturge of the Tonhalle, Uwe Sommer, and the managing director of the Hans Werner Henze Foundation, Michael Kerstan.
