New fellow of the Hans Werner Henze Foundation
Arne Gieshoff
The Hans Werner Henze Foundation, by it‘s scholarship is helping a young composer who just has finished his studies and already has shown some evidence of his talent. Furthermore, he should not have exeeded the age of 35. The amount of the scholarship reflects the founder‘s wish to show that a composer can make a living on his pure art.
For the artistic council, it remains, ever following Maestro Henze‘s vision, important, that the awardee is expressing himself with a very own, original musical language indipendent to musical fads or schools.
Arne Gieshoff is satisfying all these premises excellently. He had first composition lessons at the age of 15 with Cord Meijering at the Darmstadt Akademie für Tonkunst. Later, from 2009 to 2015, he studied in London at the Royal College of Music with Kenneth Hesketh (Bachelor) and Jonathan Cole, Simon Holt and Dai Fujikura (Master with distinction).
At the same time we say goodbye to our leaving fellow, Riccardo Panfili. He made good use of his time writing three works (Panfili is the only composer of the last decades weho has been commissioned 2 pieces by the orchestra della Scala):

Composer Arne Gieshoff is based in Germany and the United Kingdom. His music hs been performed, among ohters, by BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, Philharmonia Orchestra, London Philharmonic Orchestra, Royal Scottish National Orchestra, Luxembourg Sinfonietta, Hebrides Ensemble, Composers Ensemble, Size Zero Opera and the Darmstadt Phorminx Ensemble under important conducters such as Oliver Knussen, Clement Power, Richard Baker, Robin O'Neill, Gregory Charette, Marcel Wengler and Thomas Søndergårdt. It has been broadcast by BBC Radio 3, BR-KLASSIK and SR2 and has been published by the Luxembourg Society of Contemporary Music and on CD by the Riot Ensemble/Coviello Classics.
Gieshoff recieved numerous awards and prizes, such as the Royal Philharmonic Society Composition Prize in 2012 and the Theodore Holland Intercollegiate Award in 2014. In 2014 and 2015 he was Sound and Music’s Composer-in-Residence with the Birmingham Contemporary Music Group and Composer-in-Residence with the Dutch Ensemble Oerknal. Gieshoff has been scholar of the Mendelssohn Foundation from 2014 to 2016, London Symphony Orchestra Soundhub Associate and received a fellowship for the Tanglewood Music Center in 2014. In 2015 he was awarded the President’s Award of the Royal College of Music, given by HRH The Prince of Wales.
Arne Gieshoff finished his formal education at the Royal College of Music, London in 2015 (master with distinction), where he studied with Jonatan Cole, Simon Holt, Kenneth Hesketh and Dai Fujikura. Before he studied composition with Cord Meijering and at the Peter-Cornelius-Conservatory in Mainz. His studies have been supported by a ABRSM Scholarship, the Countess of Munster Musical Trust, the RVW Trust Award and RCM Foundation Scholarship. Furthermore he enjoyed masterclasses with Oliver Knussen, Colin Matthews, Julian Anderson, Gerald Barry, Unsuk Chin, Philippe Hurel and Johannes Schöllhorn.
Along with his work as composer, Arne Gieshoff is founder and artistic director of the London ensemble for contemporary music, the “explorensemble”.
