On 12 December 2007, German President Horst Köhler awarded the Grand Cross of the Order of Merit with Star of the Federal Republic of Germany to Hans Werner Henze.
Michael Steiner, the Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany in Rome, invited numerous friends of Henze from Rome to his residence, the Villa Almone, for the ceremony, which was followed by a gala dinner.
